A Walk through the city of “Kastanienbeutel” (Chestnutbags)
Why do the natives of this city like to call themselves “Kastanienbeutel”? We will clarify this question at the beginning of our circuit. Answers to further mystery questions follow while walking: why is Ludwigsburg called the “Dritte Residenz” (Third Residence) and why are they still called “Lumpenburger” by the people of Stuttgart. There are too many questions of this city which need an answer. The walk starts at the fountain of the residential palace in the courtyard. The tour takes you via the “Kaffeeberg” (Coffee Mountain) to the market place with the Friedrichskirche (Church) to Mömpelgard Street. People like Jud Süß Oppenheimer, Caspar Schiller and family and Johann Carl von Zeppelin, all important people to the throne, used to live here. Another must-see and important historical site is the old cemetery. You can admire numerous graves from the throne of Württemberg with their magnificent headstones. One of them is the grave of the last King of Württemberg Wilhelm II. and his first wife Marie von Waldeck-Pyrmont, who passed away early.
